# Co-Simulation
Co-simulation refers to a method used in the simulation of complex systems where different subsystems, models, or components are integrated in a more or less coordinated manner, often using separate simulation tools, solvers, and models that are specialized for different aspects of the system\'s behavior. This approach is particularly useful in multidisciplinary studies where the system under investigation encompasses distinct physical domains (such as mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and control systems) that interact with each other.
The core idea behind co-simulation is to allow each subsystem to be modeled and simulated within an environment that is most appropriate for its nature, while still being part of a larger, integrated simulation effort. This integration is achieved by establishing a communication protocol that allows the different simulation environments to exchange data at specified simulation times or events. This exchange ensures that the interactions and dependencies between the subsystems are taken into account, thereby enabling a more accurate representation of the overall system behavior.

## Accidental Co-Simulation
In some projects, the simulation architecture happens by accident instead of by design. What do I mean by this? In some big projects, different teams may grow their own simulation capabilities for their own needs (imagine an aerospace company where the team behind flight control grows its own simulation capabilities whereas the team behind fuel systems grows its own). Now, these two teams may realize down the road that it would be really beneficial if their simulation environments would interoperate; flight control laws could perform better being able to know how fuel is being used and how the fuel redistributes throughout flight. This is what I call accidental co-simulation; when the need to interoperate simulation environments comes as an afterthought and not as something engineers plan and design in advance. Accidental co-simulation can be very problematic because an ecosystem of unreliable middleware may proliferate to make systems work together, impacting the overall dependability of the simulation capabilities of the project.
